Citing studies that “paint a grim picture” for firefighters nationwide, the Wilmington Fire Department wants to provide consistent, accessible, mental health care tailored to the unique and challenging needs of first responders. Last budget cycle, a similar WFD request was denied and it’s not clear how it will fare this year — although the city says it has established a working group to address concerns.

Last year, we reported on the abrupt closing of the Career Readiness Academy at Mosley — a little-known but beloved program in the New Hanover County Schools district. Public pushback saved the Mosley program, but developed into a debate over a 'newcomer school' for immigrants who had recently arrived in the United States, introduced as a possible replacement for Mosley. On this show, we unpack some of the narratives and misinformation that became part of that debate.

First up on this episode, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on two cases coming out of North Carolina this week — one dealing with the dubious 'independent state legislator' theory, and the other with affirmative action for colleges and universities. Then, a messy story about how the culture wars are playing out at UNCW — and beyond. And, NHRMC President Shelbourn Stevens is, quite abruptly, out of a job.
